North West 10k makes a million

There was a big piece of history created on Monday night in the Mount Errigal Hotel when it was announced that the proceeds from the 28th North West 10k brought the charity event over the 1 million euros mark for the first time. Just shy of a total of €984,000 had been raised over the previous 27 years so all eyes were focused on 10k Chairperson Neil Martin when he came to the podium to announce that €34,800 had been raised from the 2025 charity run and walk to bring the total since 1997 to €1,018,000.

That was a monumental milestone for all involved with the North West 10k be that as a committee member, a charity and all those who have taken part in the popular community event over the past 28 years. It’s predecessor was the Rockhill 10k which had been running for over a decade from the mid-1980s. The army personnel announced that it would not be continuing to run the charity event after 1996. It was Charlie Kelly and a few others who had a conversation about continuing the race and walk. The rest is history as the first committee was formed in the Mount Errigal Hotel with Charlie Kelly as Chairperson. Since then over 40 charities have benefitted handsomely under the name of the North West 10k.

The two 2025 charities Donegal Horizons CLG and Multiple Sclerosis Donegal Branch each received cheques to the tune of €17,476. The 10K walk/run has helped 41 local charities achieve great things since it began in 1997.

Neil Martin commended the charities for their work this year and acknowledged every voluntary committee member who has served since 1997. Mayor of Letterkenny, Cllr Ciaran Brogan, congratulated everyone and said: “It’s a great example of people coming together and so much good coming from it. To each one of you, congratulations and well done. Having reached that million mark means so much to each one of you.”

From coffee mornings to pub quizzes, and the spectacular Stars in Their Eyes show, this year’s two charities pulled out all the stops to generate funds and awareness for their work. Anne Ramsey of Donegal Horizons CLG stated that the €17,476 donation will significantly enhance services in Carndonagh and Letterkenny. Donegal Horizons, which supports adults with mild to moderate intellectual disabilities or autism, opened its new Letterkenny premises in the Grand Central building this month, and the funds will also assist with set-up costs.

Sam Kennedy Chairperson of the MS Ireland Donegal branch said that every euro is appreciated. The charity will be using the funds to cover supports such as physio, welfare and outings for members in Donegal.

The North West 10K committee is a 12-strong group that organises the race and supports charities in their three months of fundraising ahead of the event. They were joined tonight by former committee members, including past chairpersons Grace and James Boyle. Charlie Kelly, though absent, was also acknowledged for his work from the very first event at Rockhill. Other past committee members there from the early years included Bridgeen and Patsy Doherty and Rosemary Foy. Retired Garda Mick Foy and serving member Sergeant Eunan Walsh were also in attendance along with Donegal Volunteer Centre representatives.

“We all have been on a very big journey since the launch back in February. It was important at the outset for the two charities to know what was involved in order for it to be a success for all of them. We emphasised the need to get to work quickly with ideas for fundraisers that would boost the proceeds ahead of the actual run and walk. As well as the money raised it has given the charities a lot of media exposure and public awareness of what they do on a day-to-day basis” Mr Martin said.

He also acknowledged the hard work of his own committee since the New Year in making sure that the charities were supported every step of the way. “Lots of things have to be put in place along the way to make sure everything goes right on the day. We have people on the committee that always step up to the plate when we need them. It’s important that everything is spot-on for the actual charity run and walk.

The bottom line is the health and safety of everyone taking part. That was achieved again with the help of the Gardai under Sergeants Elaine Gordon and Liam Gillespie, all the stewards and marshalls who gave off their time to help us on the day. Thanks also to the Donegal Volunteer Centre for providing people to do various jobs and the Red Cross. Liam O’Donnell and all the team at Letterkenny Community Centre as always gave us full cooperation with the use of the Marquee for the pre-registrations and setting up inside on the day of the event” Mr Martin.

The support of the five sponsors Brian McCormick Inter-Sport, Century Complex, Donegal Daily, the Mount Errigal Hotel and the Value Centre was acknowledged on Monday night by Mr Martin. “These five sponsors have been with us for a number of years. Their generous input allows us as a committee to give the maximum possible to the three charities. I also want Terry and Conor McEniff and the Mount Errigal Hotel for the use of rooms for meetings, the launch and the presentations here tonight. I also want at this point to thank very much Donegal Person of the Year Moya John McCarter who was with us on the Bank Holiday Monday to officially start the event and make the presentations to the winners afterwards” Mr Martin said.

Special guest for the event on Monday night was the new Mayor of the Letterkenny/Milford Municipal Cllr Ciaran Brogan. Also present was Cllr Donal Mandy Kelly who was congratulated on his election as Leas-Cathaoirleach of Donegal County Council earlier in the day. Monday was a momentous night for the North West 10k. Passing the one million euros mark was a testimony to the work of so many people giving of their time voluntarily to support over 40 causes.

Later the Committee brought the historic cheque to the home of the first Chairperson Charlie Kelly who expressed his delight at the news. He praised the support that he received back in 1997 when the idea was floated of continuing the good work that had been done by Rockhill 10k Committee. 28 years on that baton is being carried on by a loyal group of volunteers. In the Autumn work will resume for the 29th North West 10k!

Congratulations to Mark Greenan and Noreen Scanlan winners of their respective male and female categories at the recent North West 10k charity race. 

It was Mark's second time to do so having also won in 2022. And it was back-to-back victories for Noreen.

Sean McGinley wins North West 10k

In his first time to do the event Glenswilly man Sean McGinley was the winner of the 28th North West 10k which took place in Letterkenny on Bank Holiday Monday. He follows in the footsteps of a previous Glen winner Charlie Gallagher. On Monday the Finn Valley AC member had a ding dong battle with Danny Mooney eventually crossing the line in a time of 30 minutes 51 seconds on a sunny morning in the Cathedral. That was six seconds ahead of Mooney with Declan Ferry of Rosses AC third in a time of 32.35. There were over 1,200 entries as runners and walkers took part in the event to raise much needed money for two charities Multiple Sclerosis Donegal Branch and Donegal Horizons ClG.

Letterkenny AC’s Nakita Burke was the winner of the women’s category in a time of 35 minutes and 27 seconds which she was very happy with in her first North West 10k success. The Letterkenny Educate Together primary schoolteacher hadn’t run the event in seven years. She was 13th overall. Noleen Scanlan who was going for three-in-a-row had to settle for second place this time. The Letterkenny AC woman’s time was 37.31 which gave her 27th place overall. The third woman home was Rosses AC’s Helen McCready and 36th overall clocking 38.20 for the 10k.

While the amount of money raised from this year’s North West 10k will not be officially announced until next month the organisers are quietly confident that they will surpass the 1 million euros mark. To date nearly 984,000 has been raised for 40 charities. Among those running the 10k on Monday was 79-year-old James Doherty from Kilmacrennan and 30 members of the 28th Battalion from Finner Army Camp under the direction of Sergeant Ciaran Friel.

The annual charity event moved from its traditional Sunday slot in 2022. So it was fourth time for it to be held on the Bank Holiday Monday. Donegal Person of the Year John McCarter acted as the official starter for the runners and walkers.

Last year Letterkenny AC’s Mark Grennan was first home in a time of 32:23. So on Monday Sean McGinley bettered that time by 32 seconds. It was the first time that 31 minutes had ben broken in a number of years. But that good time is still well of the record set  27 years ago.  There were prizes of €500 each on Monday to break the male and female records. 29.14 is the men’s record set by Dublin native Noel Berkeley in 1998.

The women’s record of 32.34 was set by another Dubliner Maria McCambridge in 2005. Noleen Scanlan was aiming to be only the second woman to do a three-in-a-row. Finn Valley’s Teresa McGloin had done it in 2010, 2011 and 2012. As well as Scanlan just three other women have done back-to-backs McCambridge (2004, 20025), Helena Crossan (1999 and 2000) and Natasha Adams (2014 and 2015).  Last year Scanlan’s time was 36.07. On Monday Nakita Burke bettered that by 40 seconds.

Charities named for 28th North West 10k

As the North West 10k heads towards the magical 1 million euros mark the two benefitting charities for the 2025 charity run and walk were named at the launch on Monday night in the Mount Errigal Hotel. Chairperson Neil Martin confirmed that Multiple Sclerosis Donegal Branch and Donegal Horizons CLG will be the beneficiaries from an event that has raised nearly €984,000 for 40 charities over the past 27 years.

The 28th North West 10k will take place on Bank Holiday Monday, May 5th in Letterkenny.  The 2025 annual charity event was officially launched by North West 10k Vice-Chairperson Nancy McNamee.  The Mayor of the Letterkenny/Milford Municipal District Cllr Gerry McMonagle was also in attendance along with Cllrs Donal Coyle and Thomas Sean Devine along with Eamonn Bonner from the Donegal Volunteer Centre who provide invaluable support to the North West 10k Committee on the day of the charity event.

Over the next 12 weeks, the chosen charities will be out in force, fundraising and increasing awareness of the vital work they do supporting people across Donegal. The overall total raised since the Northwest 10k started in 1997 is now €983,924. So the Committee hopes to reach the €1 million mark this year and the goal now is to raise at least €16,076 to do just that. It will be up to the two charities to take on that challenge with the support of the North West 10k organisation. All monies raised stays in Donegal to benefit local organisations that are doing so much good work.

Neil Martin said it was a remarkable achievement for the volunteer committee members past and present who have supported 40 local causes since 1997.

He also expressed his appreciation to the five sponsors: DonegalDaily.com, Brian McCormick Interpsport, Century Cinemas, the Mount Errigal Hotel and the Value Centre. Mr Martin acknowledged the work done annually by the Gardai under the direction of Sergeant Eunan Walsh who worked closely with the 10k Traffic and Route Management members Neily McDaid and Brendan McDaid.

Representatives of the two charities expressed their delight at being selected and outlined how the funds raised will benefit their members in Donegal. Claire Devine spoke on Donegal Horizons CLG  while Clement Clarke represented MS Donegal Branch.

Last year the total raised was €52,192. So the three charities benefitted to the tune of €17,398 each. Chairperson Neil Martin said so many worthy causes have been able to use the money raised from North West 10k to enhance the quality of the services they provide.  He also acknowledged the current North West committee for their endeavours over the past couple of months to put plans in place for the 2025 event.

Applications open for the 2025 North West 10k

With the magical million euros mark now within touching distance the North West 10k Committee is inviting applications for the 2025 Charity Run and Walk which takes place on Monday 5th May in Letterkenny. It will be the 28th North West 10k whose first event was staged in 1997 and to date has raised €983,924. So the Committee hopes to reach €1 million next year and the goal now is to raise at least €16,076 to do just that. It will be up to the selected charities to take on that challenge with the support of the North West 10k organisation.

Chairperson Neil Martin is now asking interested charities to email their applications to toni@letterkennychamber.com. Closing date for applications is Saturday 11th of January. “We are heading towards the million euros mark so hopefully the selected charities can make that happen. It would be great to reach that milestone but a lot of hard work will be needed from ourselves and the charities. So my message is to community organisations to submit their applications in as soon as possible and before the deadline of. the 11th of January We will conduct the interviews and the successful charities will then be named at the North West 10k launch on Monday 10th of February. We couldn’t do this without the support of our sponsors so once again I want to thank Brian McCormick Intersport, Century Complex, Donegal Daily, the Mount Errigal Hotel and the Value Centre for their generosity that has helped to keep the North West 10k right up there as one of the biggest fundraisers for charity in the County. All monies raised stays in Donegal to benefit local organisations that are doing so much good work. Since 1997 when the North West 10k we have made donations to 40 charities. It’s very important to remember that it is the voluntary work of committee members past and present who have got us to this point. Our current Honoury President Charlie Kelly was the first Chairperson back 27 years ago and it’s people like him and other founding Committee members that had the courage and foresight to take on the challenge as a successor to the Rockhill 10k.

North West 10k AGM

North West 10k targets €1m mark

The North West 10k Committee will commence planning shortly for the 28th staging of the charity event which to date has raised €983,924 sine the first race in 1996. It means now that reaching the magical 1 million euros mark is very much the target for next year. Next month the Committee will invite charities to apply to be the beneficiaries from what will hopefully be an historic occasion for the North West 10k organisation.   

The AGM took place in the Mount Errigal Hotel where there were no changes to the executive or committee. However, Chairperson Neil Martin has appealed for more volunteers to become part of the organisation to spread the considerable workload involved in supporting charities raise much needed money for very worthy causes.

“We have a very good committee but the numbers are small so we do need more help. So I would be asking men or women out there with a little bit of time to come forward and join us. It is very satisfying work and very rewarding when you see what the North West 10k has done for so many charities over the past 27 years. The AGM in the Mount Errigal Hotel saw the outgoing committee and executive re-elected for another year. The next charity run and walk will take place on Bank Holiday Monday the 5th of May in Letterkenny. Neil Martin thanked the five sponsors for their support again in 2024.

“My thanks to all the sponsors for their support again this year and in particular the five main sponsors Mount Errigal Hotel, Donegal Daily, Value Centre, Century Complex and Brian McCormack Intersport. Their support ensures that there is more money for the charities. The local Municipal District Councillors gave valuable financial support and I thank each of them for their contribution,” Mr Martin said.

He also acknowledged the Gardai, under the leadership of Sergeant Eunan Walsh, for their help and guidance especially on the day of the race. Letterkenny Chamber has been providing administration assistance from the start in 1997 and that support has continued to the present day under current CEO Toni Forrester.

Neil Martin also acknowledged the hard work of his own committee in 2024 in making sure that the charities were supported every step of the way. “I also want to acknowledge again the invaluable commitment of  the stewards and marshalls who gave off their time to help us on the day. Thanks also to the Donegal Volunteer Centre for providing people to do various jobs and the Red Cross. Liam O’Donnell and all the team at Letterkenny Community Centre as always gave us full cooperation with the use of the Marquee for the pre-registrations and setting up inside on the day of the event”  Martin.

It means that breaking the magical million euro mark is now very much the target next year. But for whatever charities that will be chosen there will still be hard graft involved to raise just over €16,000 to do that.

Mr Martin said that a huge effort had been put in by the Cara House Family Resource Centre, Letterkenny Community Childcare Centre and the Kilmacrennan, Termon, Gartan, Churchill and Trentagh Community First Responders Group and that was reflected in the amount of money raised.

“We all have been on a very big journey since the launch back in February. It was important at the outset for the three charities to know what was involved in order for it to be a success for all of them. We emphasised the need to get to work quickly with ideas for fundraisers that would boost the proceeds ahead of the actual run and walk. They got stuck in and it was full-on for three months. We were all glad to see all that come to an end on the 6th of May. As well as the money raised it has given the charities a lot of media exposure and public awareness of what they do on a day-to-day basis” Mr Martin said.

He also acknowledged the hard work of his own committee since the New Year in making sure that the charities were supported every step of the way. “Lots of things have to put in place along the way to sure everything goes right on the day. We have people on the committee that always step up to the plate when we need them. It’s important that everything is spot-on for the actual charity run and walk.

The bottom line is the health and safety of everyone taking part. That was achieved again with the help of the Gardai under Sergeant Eunan Walsh, all the stewards and marshalls who have off their time to help us on the day. Thanks also to the Donegal Volunteer Centre for providing people to do various jobs and the Red Cross. Liam O’Donnell and all the team at Letterkenny Community Centre as always gave us full cooperation with the use of the Marquee for the pre-registrations and setting up inside on the day of the event” Mr Martin.

Special guest for the event on Monday night was the Mayor of Letterkenny Kevin Bradley in his final official duty before handing over the chain of office later this month. Neil Martin paid tribute to Mr Bradley’s support for the 10k and wished him well in the future as he moves after his recent disappointment in the local elections. Also present were Cllrs Ciaran Brogan, Donal Mandy Kelly, Gerry McMonagle and Donal Coyle.

The Kilmacrennan, Termon, Gartan, Churchill and Trentagh Community First Responders Group are a new group setup at the end of last year with the aim of helping members of the public that suffer cardiac arrest or other medical emergencies in those areas. They are aiming to facilitate the installation and maintenance of AEDs for public access in the areas that they cover.This will be achieved through the CFR Group’s trained volunteers. The Group will also provide CPR/AED/CFR training to interested members of the public.

The work of Cara House includes activities, courses and interest groups as well as services. It provides a valuable resource for the whole Letterkenny community from young to old, especially at periods in their lives when individuals are vulnerable. They are currently fundraising to upgrade their community van for making deliveries.

Letterkenny Community Childcare Centre CLG has been in operation for over 40 years. They have over 150 children attending daily, supporting around 130 families. Currently they have a waiting list of 500 children and hope to relocate to increase capacity.

North West 10k entries will be taken at the Marquee beside the Letterkenny Community Centre today Sunday (3 p.m. - 6 p.m.). As well as entering runners and walkers will be able to pick up their 10k t-shirts and race numbers. Those who have entered online are also encouraged to come along on and collect their t-shirts and numbers in order to avoid delays on Bank Holiday Monday morning. For those who are not in a position to register today there will be a final opportunity to enter tomorrow morning 8-10am.

Update 14.4.2024

The North West 10k Committee has confirmed that Donegal Person of the Year, Moya Brennan will be their Special Guest to officially fire the starting gun for the runners and walkers taking part in the charity event on Bank Holiday Monday the 6th of May.

The Gweedore woman said she is  delighted to accept the invitation from the North West 10k Committee to officially start the run on the 6th May in support of the three charities and is very much looking forward to the 27th staging of an event that has been running since 1996. “I am thrilled to have been invited to perform the honour of starting the North West 10k Charity Run and Walk on May 6th. I am very much looking forward to being in Letterkenny to support the charities and meeting those involved.”
